Aaron Mahoney Wins Princes Coca-Cola Cup Snooker
08 Oct 2006

AARON MAHONEY has defeated Steve MIFSUD 4/1 to win the Princes Snooker Cup Snooker Tournament over the weekend. From a record field of 84 entries including several interstate players, Mahoney and Steve Mifsud emerged as worthy finalists and entertained a 100 strong crowd at the Princes Snooker Centre with a superb display of precision snooker in the final.

After a tentative start from both players a one-sided but entertaining match developed with MAHONEY getting the better of MIFSUD 4/1. The first frame was scrappy but went to Mahoney. Then thanks to a decisive 56 break in the next MAHONEY opened up a 2 -0 lead.

MIFSUD immediately upped gears and hit back with a trademark long pot in the third frame which started a winning 64 break from him. In the fourth, Mifsud was in first and broke down on 20 only to see his opponent clear the table with 92 (the highest break of the tournament).

Now, needing only one more frame to secure victory, Mahoney's break building proved to be the key. In the last frame MIFSUD on a small break ran out of position and MAHONEY pounced to take frame and match with a 78 clearance to the final black.

"I'm very delighted to win again here at Princes and to defeat the great Steve Mifsud in the final is especially pleasing for me. I'd like to thank my parents for all their support over the years and the Princes Cup has always been a special tournament which I really love playing in." said MAHONEY as he grasped the silver trophy.

For his part, STEVE MIFSUD was gracious in defeat and praised his opponent "Aaron has played very well indeed during the final and throughout the tournament. His hard work, commitment and dedication to snooker is paying off. He is a worthy winner here tonight."

MAHONEY now joins an small group of players (Johl Younger and Robby
Foldvari) to have won this event three times.

For his win MAHONEY claimed the trophy, a cheque for $3,000 and the TV / DVD player for the highest break (92). MIFSUD collected a cheque for $1,500 as runner-up.
